Funds realized from this project support the local, state and national activities of Girl Scouts. Holly had sold over 80 boxes of cookies as of this week. Miriam Reeve of Sperryville, Ranger Division Secretary at Shenandoah National Park, retired Jan. 17 after more than 25 years of government service. Mrs. Reeve received both Special Achievement and Outstanding Performance awards during her service at Shenandoah National Park, where she has assisted seven Chief Park Rangers and worked on a variety of special assignments for the Park.

The County's top volunteers were honored for their contributions to the fire and rescue service in Rappahannock County. Sheila Scott of Amissville received the Outstanding Rescue Squad Person of the Year award, while Ennis Jenkins of Washington and Jeff Williams of Chester Gap shared the Firefighter of the Year award. The Inn at Little Washington's kitchen staff was the guest last Tuesday of The Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C. for a formal lunch and tour of the hotels' kitchen. After the lunch a tour of the hotel was conducted and the Inn's chefs were particularly fascinated with the hotel s $40,000 custom-designed smoker and the vacuum sealing machinery. After hearing rumors that soft drinks contain huge amounts of sugar, Tom Von Fange's eighth grade earth science classes decided to find out the facts. By evaporating the water from a Coke, the class measured the weight of the remaining solid. Then it was translated into an equivalent amount of sugar. The result? On average, a 12 ounce Coke contains nine teaspoons of sugar. The class concluded that the rumors were largely true and the experiment almost made them give up drinking sodas.
