Herbert P/Shanks returns

from deployment Petty Officer Third Class Herbert P. Shanks, son of Barbara L. Shanks of Washington, Va. recently returned from a six month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, home ported in Norfolk. Tluring the deployment, Shanks's ship assisted in the recovery effort of Gulf Air Flight 072. Shanks also visited cities in Croatia, Greece, Italy, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. During these visits Sailors participated in community relations projects and had the opportunity to enjoy the local culture and cuisine. While in Bahrain, USS George Washington Sailors painted the A1 Hytharn Islamic School and the Saudi/Bahraini School for the Blind. Shanks is a 1990 graduate of Rappahannock County High School and joined the Navy in December 1999.
