Maestro Lorin Maazel of Castleton will become the 24th music director of the nations oldest symphony orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, starting with the 2002 concert season.
Maestro Maazel's selection caps a three year search for a replacement for the present director, Kurt Masur, and gives the Philharmonic only its third American director since its founding in 1842—the first being founding director, Urelli Corelli Hill, and the last Leonard Bernstein (1958-1969).
Maestro Maazel, currently on tour in Spain, will leave his position as music director of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra next year to assume the New York Philharmonic directorship, and his virtuosity will become much more accessible to his fans in Rappahannock.
