On Fnday, Jan. 26, the basketball teams traveled to Madison for their final game in the home and away series. It was destined to be a tough game for the Varsity Panthers as the two starters, Chris Fletcher and junior Jeff Ritenour were out sick. Head Coach Mike Dayton was also away attending a family funeral in West Virginia.
The Rapp squad did all they could, but were missing too many pieces to make a go of it. The Mountaineers won the game by a score of 65-39. Senior Mark Wharton had 15 points for the Panthers in the losing effort.
The Junior Varsity Panthers were feeling "scrappy" that night and almost stole one from the JV Mountaineers. With sophomore Andrew Gordon scoring 13 points and Gregg Jackson getting 12 more, the JV just couldn't quite close the gap and came up short, losing 43-37.
The Junior Panther 8th grade boys' team finished their last home game with a victory over the visiting Jon Williams Middle School team from Clarke County. It was Parents’ Night for the boys as all Moms and Dads for the players and managers were called out onto the court. The boys responded to the occasion and gave the parents and fans a great game.
The JP's led early, but lost the lead and trailed at halftime 19-13. They battled back in the third quarter and finished the game, pulling away and winning 43-37. Seventh grader Jason Jenkins led the squad with 25 points. Eightgrader Monte Christian's 18 rebounds and Ethan Berry's 7 points were also key in gaining the victory.
