that football could be self-sustaining in the near future, and that a successful football program could financially support other school sports. In response to Mr. Smythe’s question of football receipts, head football coach Glenn Proctor of Strasburg said “For us to make anything under $30 or 35,000 is unheard of. . .”
Mr. Smythe spoke of the opportunity that football provides and of the need for a fall sport in addition to cross country. He said that eighty-nine boys are participating in spring sports this year, compared to only twelve who participated last fall, and that football would give the other seventy* seven a chance to participate.
He also responded to preprepared questions with a slide that illustrated football program basic information for the first few years. He pointed out that the first year calls for a six game schedule with a freshman team—the first game being an away game at Madison, and first home game scheduled for Sept. 11, 2002, with Strasburg.
The public was largely supportive of a football program, with most who spoke referring to the opportunities that a football program presents to the County’s boys, and of the strong community support as reflected in the funds donated to date. Those in opposition spoke of the need to attend to existing needs and to academics first, and of the possible contention for school funds and athletic field space.
Board comments reflected the sentiment of the public speakers, with most speaking in full support for a football program, especially if self-supporting. Final School Board comments and a Board decision should be on the agenda for their May 14 meeting.
