I mance by Sharp as she struck out 11 and walked none on the way to the team’s 9 to 2 victory. Sharp and sophomore speed demon, Ryisha Cook, each had two hits to lead the Lady Panther offensive attack.
The JV girls traveled to Luray and hit their first “speed-bump” of the season. Undefeated up until that game, the JV Lady Panthers were unable to stop the JV Lady Bulldogs from scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning. When that run crossed home plate the team had just suffered its first loss of the season, a 4 to 3 defeat at the hands of the Luray nine.
Soccer
First-year Head Coach Shay Bell called it, “The best win of the season so far.” He was referring to a 3 to 2 victory over the Madison Boy’s Varsity Soccer team at Madison County last Tuesday. Madison came out cautious and Panther attacker, junior Ralph Pace responded by driving home a shot that gave the Rapp side an early one to nothing lead. The intensity picked up on the field and 10 minutes after Paces’ goal, Madison responded with the equalizer. Ten minutes after that, Madison scored the goahead goal that was good enough to give them a 2 to 1 advantage at the half. The second half was great soccer on both sides of the ball.
Junior sweeper, Michael Fairbrother continued his superb play as the quarterback of the defense. With approximately 11 minutes left in the game, Pace drilled in the tying goal. From here to the end it would be anyone’s game. With just under 3 minutes left and Pace at about 18 yards out, he trapped a ball and dropped it in front of senior Garner Smythe, who used his left foot to loop the ball over the Madison goalie for the game winner.
The varsity girls were at home against the Madison side the same night and played their hearts out. Unfortunately, it would be to no avail on that night, as they could not complete a chance and get a goal. As a result the Lady Mountaineers left here with a 1 to 0 victory. On Thursday, April 27 the girls traveled to Central High School in the valley to play a non-district contest against the Lady Falcons. The Central girls lead the Shenandoah District and they gave our girls a rough time, as they defeated the Lady Panthers 4 to 1. Junior Adrianne Moore
