The Washington Tbwn Council has voted unanimously to approve Green Valley Auction House of Harrisonburg, Va. as the auctioneer for the contents of historic Avon Hall at a two-day auction on June 27 and 28.
Councilman and auction committee member Jeff Benson, who recommended council approval of the auction house at its April 9 meeting, said that Green Valley was one of “eight or ten” auctioneers who bid on the job, and that it “stood out.”
Benson said Green Valley had a higher estimate of value of the contents than other auctioneers ($100,000 to $200,000 versus $80,000 to $100,000) and that its rates were lower than the other bidders.
Benson said that the auction house proposed a two-day event—the first day to sell miscellaneous articles currently stored in the basement of Avon Hall, and the second to sell the “antiques and decorations” located in Avon Hall’s living spaces.
