County high school student Matt Shak received a gold medal for his first place finish in the state Skills Olympics sponsored by the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America in Virginia Beach last month.
Shak won his medal in the facilities maintenance competition, where he was required to install a vanity sink and demonstrate glass and tile cutting.
He was one of 11 Rappahannock County High School students who competed in the two-day competition on March 28 and 29.
The students represented Rappahannock County and District X of the VICA. They previously placed first at the District X competition in order to advance to the state contest.
Finishing fourth in the state for the VICA opening and closing ceremony were RCHS VICA executive officers: Johnny Wines, Jason Steightiff, Jeff Burke, Andy Propst, Adam Moore, Cody Rodriguez and Rocky Kidwell. The seven conducted a mock business meeting following a very strict script.
