Two Januarys ago, watercolorist Lois Manookian sat quietly on the upper deck of a 90-passenger freighter anchored off the coast of a remote South Pacific island, her paintbrush in hand.
The 40-year Rappahannock resident delicately added color to her sketch, completely oblivious of the small boats that escorted her fellow tourists ashore the beautiful, grassy lands of French Polynesia. Suddenly noticing the boats, brightly colored with day-trippers’ sportswear, she raced downstairs to her dormitorystyle room, stashed her art supplies on her bunk, grabbed a towel and ran to catch the last boat ashore.
“I was so cross,” smiled the renowned watercolorist, who has painted professionally since 1974. “I arrived just in time to see the last boat leaving.”
While Manookian’s artistic enthusiasm caused her to miss a day of tropical island sightseeing, it also resulted in a warmly colored depiction of her visual experience that morning.
The painting, “French Polynesia,” is one of 26 watercolor paintings that will grace the walls of Long View Gallery on Main Street in Sperryville from April 24 to May 19.
Manookian’s fourth solo show in Rappahannock County is entitled, “Journeys” and features watercolor paintings from her travels. An Artist’s Reception will be held Saturday, April 26 from 4 to 7 p.m.
