Manookian, 74, has lived in Rappahannock since 1962 and while she has owned several properties, her present home which she designed herself 12 years ago, is her favorite place to be.

“You could say I built the house around my studio,” she laughed, looking around her sunlit, whitewalled, high-ceilinged haven. “It was definitely most important to me.”

Manookian gets her “most inspirational work” done early in the morning. She likes to paint for two or three hours before breaking around mid-day. When preparing for a show, she’ll add a three-hour painting stint in the late afternoon.

Sometimes she uses photographs of the landscapes she paints, for instance, as tools for her work. Rather than copying them exactly,
