We might therefore expect this decline to continue into the next decade, but such predictions should be viewed with caution.

Young adults have an inconsistent trend, with an increase during 1970-1990 and then a decline during 1990-2000; it is unknown how the population in this age group might change in the next decade.

Those aged 45 years and older have shown steady and large increases in the past 30 years. It is possible that this increase will continue as the “baby-boom” generation retires.

Members of this retiring population may choose to move to Rappahannock County, away from the bustling urban and suburban centers where they previously lived and worked.

It might be expected, given the general high cost of properties in the county, that only the more affluent of retirees would move here.

In addition, there were 515 houses in the county in the year 2000 that were not occupied by “legal” residents (i.e., the houses were vacant or people owned these properties but had their legal residence in another jurisdiction). Most of these houses were weekend or vacation homes.
