Lelapd Waldrip’s muse is nature. It has been present in his work since his first novel “The Last Grizzly” and appeared again in its sequel “Griz Nightmare.”
Now, in his newly released children’s book “Russells in the Leaves,” readers join his four Jack Russell Terriers as they journey through the woods on his property in Amissville near the Rappahannock River.
This book is written through the eyes of Waldrip’s 10-year-old dog Lizzie and follows her, her brother Spunkie and their parents Jessie and Jack as they chase sticks, trail scents and enjoy the everyday shenanigans of being a dog.
Waldrip described this book as “a color picture story that takes the Jack Russell family through their antics.”
The idea for the book came to him after photographing the dogs on their daily walks through the woods. After seeing these pictures he decided to create a story to go with them and after six months of work the book was complete and ready to become his first color publication.
Such a book came naturally for Waldrip who has been around dogs all his life. He said his youth in Mississippi was spent with hounds that he used for hunting. He has owned Irish Setters as well, but no dog has pleased him as much as the Jack Russell’s which he now owns.
Waldrip told the story of how he acquired these dogs with the love of a father in his voice.
