order business to begin a new career as a teacher.
“That was my mid-life crisis, to change my career,” she said. “I think the school system is excellent. I just realized, hey, I want to be a part of this.”
Hathaway is excited aboutthe coming year. For starters, she said she will be teaching next door to her brother, a sixth grade history teacher. She is also eager to go on this year’s seventh grade field trip to Williamsburg.
She said when she attended seventh grade at RCES, in the very class she is now teaching, her class did not get to go on the field trip due to exorbitant gas prices.
“I finally get to go this year,” she smiled.
RCES’s fourth addition this year is first grade teacher Sharon Humbles.
Humbles and her family moved to the area in 1999 to be closer to her husband’s job as an airline pilot. Since moving here she has fallen in love with the area.
“I think Rappahannock is a wonderful place to live,” she said.
During her time in the county she has volunteered in the schools. She also filled in last year as a long-term kindergarten substitute.
Humbles, who has a masters degree in education from the University of Virginia, has 19 years experience teaching kindergarten and second grade. She feels this will enable her to better prepare her students. She said that having taught second grade she knows what teachers at this level expect their students to have mastered, thus enabling her to know what skills her class should attain while in first grade.
Also new to the faculty this year is Front Royal native Missi Magalis who will be teaching seventh grade English.
Magalis returned to college after getting married and having three daughters. A recent graduate of Shenandoah University, she completed her student teaching in Warren County.
Magalis decided to work in the area because of the positive experience she had during her interview process.
“They called me for an interview and were very kind and welcoming,” she said.
Now that she has accepted the position she has high hopes for her students.
