Anyway, I thought, there is still plenty of time.

A month went by and my permit expired. My wife said to call, but I was reluctant to antagonize “them.”

Five days after the permit expired I got my own selfaddressed envelope in the mail. There was a yellow piece of paper attached to an official document. The yellow sheet told me that my permit had been issued but I could not pick it up before the date on the attached document. The date was five days previous.

I saw on the attached document that a police officer checked two boxes the day before my permit expired. One said “No pending charges,” the other “No convictions.” The judge granted the permit on the day my old one expired (five days previous.) The Clerk of Court notarized the document on the day after my old permit expired (four days previous.) _ikr my wife and I went 20 miles round-trip, left my pocket knife in the car and entered our county courthouse to get my concealed weapons permit.

We went through the magnetometer up to the third floor and stood quietly before the counter as two clerks talked. One finally looked at me and 1 asked if she could “help” me. I gave her my paperwork and she went off.

Five minutes later another lady returned and brusquely told me they had made a mistake. I could not pick up the permit until 45 days from its being received, which would be up in two more weeks. She said she had changed the date
