The Jewish tradition provides a structure within which death is addressed. Called the customs of shiva, these rituals even provide rules that guide the conduct of visitors to the grieving household. A shiva call is considered to be its own good deed. ^ Callers arrive unannounced any time of day or evening to support the mourners by offering them the opportunity to speak about the loss and by sharing memories. Shiva callers are not permitted to greet the mourner, but, instead, wait to be noticed and greeted. Conservation must be initiated by the mourner. The caller does not attempt to distract the mourner unless such a need is indicated. Hence, the caller may, at times, simply sit silently with the mourner.
