The Virginia Department of Education points out that there are several items which should he taken into consideration when examining the AYP status of schools and school divisions in the state
For starters, they said, Virginia's AYP objectives for t he 2002-03 school year were among the most stringent in the nation. The state required 61 percent of students overall and within all subgroups to show proficiency in reading. In addition, 59 percent of students were required to exhibit proficiency in mathematics.
Subgroups which were considered in the evaluation included: white, black, Hispanic, disabled students, economically disadvantaged students and those with limited English proficiency.
