and painting forms are derived from a study of work aprons. Work aprons represent the world of human endeavor, a world of effort and intent. It is also one of self-awareness and exploration.
Much like the proverbial coal miner, studio work is conducted within the light of a headlamp. Lamplight has limitations, there is no distant perspective. She operates with a general sense of direction. “By working openly,” she says, “it is possible for me to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.”
Initially, work was made by incorporating found objects with a variety of aprons. “The game" was to find and put together disparate materials. No associative meanings were intended. However, through proximity and association, meaning arose.
“With initial successes, I formulated apron imagery. Icons are intended to pay tribute to the costs of human endeavor. Aprons are solid forms with presence in a larger than lifesize scale,” she says. Materials include glazed tiles mounted on solid wood panels.
Calabria has been selected for numerous juried exhibitions, group shows and invitational one artist’s shows, including Bridgewater College, WV Wesleyan College and Eastern Mennonite University.
