Saving lives
Out here in Rappahannock County, where every
second counts in a life-threatening situation
since we are far from any hospital, it is reassuring to read how a recent emergency medical rescue brought back the gift of life.
It also shows how important it is to support our emergency medical teams as they are our link not only to the nearest hospital but to keeping us alive till we get there.
Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue squad members and neighbors Dominique and Luke DeMaitre, helped save the life of Col. John Bourgeois of Tiger Valley who had a heart attack one recent morning. (See letter to the editor on this page).
We are familiar with what happened that morning and Coi. Bourgeois is alive today because of the expertise, care and diligence exhibited by EMS volunteers Roger Roach and Ann Spieker in the ambulance on the way to Fauquier Hospital emergency room.
This rescue is a reminder that the volunteers who staff all of our county’s fire and rescue departments deserve thanks as well as financial support. They are pot paid for the time they sacrifice in training, in running calls and in raising money.
With the growing number of older people moving into the county as well as the aging baby boomers, the Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue has responded to 400 rescue calls and 100 more for fires in the past year.
The contribution these volunteers make to our community is invaluable. We extend our thanks to all of them for the work they do and urge everyone to support them.
