During the Victorian era, mourning jewelry was popularly worn in remembrance of -a loved one and as a reminder to the living of the inevitability of death. Black and white enameled rings and broaches were found in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries, and later, it became a status symbol to present mourning rings to family and friends of the bereaved. Mourning jewelry reached the height of popularity in England after the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Queen Victoria went into deep mourning, which served as an example to her subjects when faced with their own bereavements. In this country, the use of mourning jewelry increased during the Civil War, which coincided with Queen Victoria’s widowhood.
