collision

A former Rappahannock County teacher and avid horsewoman was killed in an automobile accident at Massies Comer last Thursday afternoon.
The teacher, Arlene Lauck Wake, 90, of Front Royal, was driving a 1991 four-door Mercury Tracker when she pulled from a stop sign on Route 522 into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
Wake was attempting to cross the Route 211 westbound lane when she was struck in the side by a 1998 Ford Explorer driven by Lamisha M. Allen of Winchester, according to Sgt. Gary Settle of the Virginia State Police.
Allen was traveling west on Route 211 approaching Route 522. Witnesses said Allen could not avoid the collision as Wake failed to yield the right of w ay. Wake was pronounced dead at Fauquier Hospital.
A former member of the Rappahannock Hunt, Wake was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Only last week she had attended one of its meetings at the Washington Baptist Church.
”We were so devoted to her," said friend, Jean Moffett. Wake taught her son, Frank, in the second grade. Mrs, Moffett said she and Wake had planned to have lunch at the Country Cafe this week.
After the funeral service Wednesday, friends speculated on the accident.
"Somebbdy said maybe the sun got in her eyes," Mrs. Moffett said.
