Several people have commented
on David Konick’s column in last week’s paper. There is a perception that since most of the increase in the sheriff's budget was paid for with state and/or federal grants it is free money. As you certainly know, there is no free lunch.
It’s been my experience that grants come with strings attached—usually in the form of required local matching funds—sometimes 200 percent of the grant received. So, does anyone know what choices were available and how they were made? Was there input from anyone besides the sheriff?
Could we have given our underpaid deputies more pay and benefits, instead of buying cars and gizmos? What was the required local match?
Did it come out of payroll?
