we replace our patrol cars when they reach 135,000 to 150,000 miles. The cars become unsafe as well as unreliable when they reach this high mileage in law enforcement work. Other agencies replace their cars anywhere from 75,000 miles to 100,000 miles. This year we cut one vehicle from our budget so that we could purchase a four-wheel drive vehicle to better serve our community in inclement weather.
The “Livescan” system Mr. Konick refers to as wasteful could also help identify abducted children. The system we are purchasing will not only give us the ability to fingerprint criminals for immediate identification, but can also be used as a Child ID system, providing fingerprints and pictures of the children.
This system did not cost $40,000 as Mr. Konick falsely represented; it was purchased at $23,000 and the county cost is approximately $10,000. This system is connected to the Virginia State Police fingerprint database and the State Police highly recommends that every law enforcement agency install this equipment. That is why over half of the funds is made available by the Virginia Compensation Board.
Contrary to what you are lead to believe, we do work closely with the Virginia State Police, Federal Bureau of Investigations and other local agencies and we do utilize their resources.
I really do not know what other equipment Mr. Konick is suggesting that we utilize from the State Police unless he is suggesting that we borrow ink pens from them. We only purchase equipment necessary to keep our citizens and our deputies safe.
Mr. Konick, we are a professional law enforcement agency and are obviously living in a different time era than what you five in. Our goal is to provide the citizens of Rappahannock County with the highest quality of law enforcement available at minimal cost to the citizens.
Having the right tools to work with could be the difference between life and death of one of our citizens, one of our deputies or maybe even you. As you see, we do save money anyway we can because we too pay taxes to support our own jobs.
Don’t play dirty politics and try to destroy the credibility of our agency with false representation. I challenge you to step up and contribute to your community and support our T.E.A.M. instead of making negative comments in an attempt to tarnish the integrity of the men and women who work hard to keep our community safe.
