Rural Rustic Road program but said trees at the very edge of a roadway can be a hazard to drivers who exceed a safe speed on secondary roads.
Jim Filson, hydrology engineer for VDOT outlined possible solutions to fix drainage problems along rural roads. His most significant suggestion was for property owners to plan the drainage of their driveways better to stop the gravel eroding into VDOT roadways and ditches.
Marc Malik, RLEP director emeritus who has had years of experience as a landscape architect with the Shenandoah National Park, discussed vegetation along the roadways. He recommended to VDOT that the shoulders on the roadways be closely mowed and the slopes to the shoulders not be closely mowed to control erosion.
Malik also suggested that the roadways not be mowed until after the wild flowers had bloomed and gone to seed. Attendees greeted this suggestion with applause.
