At 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, a motorcyclist speeding on Route 211 about three miles east of Thornton Gap on a twisting and steep section of the road crashed his motorcycle and sustained serious injuries.
Troy Sean Merritt, 28, of Front Royal was riding his 2001 Honda CBR Sports motorcycle east on the highway, approaching a right-hand hairpin turn when he lost control and crashed into the guard rail.
He was taken to Fauquier Hospital for leg injuries and back pain. The Sperryville Fire Department came on the scene for traffic control. Merritt, an experience rider, was charged with reckless driving, a Class 1 misdemeanor, according to the investigating officer, State TrooperLee Felts.
Fight at market
Rappahannock County sheriffs’ deputies responded to a call in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 22, reporting a “fight in progress” in the front parking lot of Mountainside Market in Sperryville. Two men were exchanging words, and “there was an altercation about to get lit off” said Sheriff Larry Sherertz. Both men were intoxicated, according to the Sheriff. Deputies arrived on the scene and transported the would-be brawlers home. Nobody was injured or arrested. An assault did not take place. This is the second time in two weeks that disagreements have led to a police response at the market.
Court hearing
The case of Worley v. Tbwn of Washington continues in court after Rappahannock County Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey W. Parker refused May 20 to grant a motion by the Worleys’ attorney to reconsider an earlier ruling in which he stopped short of riding the town’s Historic District Ordinance invalid. After a date of Aug. 5 was scheduled for a further hearing, the judge said he hoped both sides would “resolve” this case.
