Thornton Gap has become in the last couple of years — “a race track,” according to 1st Sgt. Ed Murphy of the State Police.
“The lowered speed limit came out of motorcycle accidents,” said Murphy. “It’s a beautiful scenic route, and it’s a shame, people riding it like it was a race track. It impacts all the vehicles.”
Indeed, the entire speed limit issue grew out of two fatal motorcycle accidents in the last year, one in March on the first sharp turn on the Rappahannock side at Tumbridge. This general area, along a stretch of Route 211 three miles from Shenandoah National Park, has seen the death or injury of dozens of motorcyclists. The second fatality was last August, also in this same area.
With the reduced speed limit, State Police feel they can better enforce the laws on the winding and steep road. With the former speed limit, police found enforcement difficult on the curving roads.
“We hope it will encourage people to drive slower,” said Murphy.
