EMT when he was a senior at Rappahannock County High School, and before enlisting in the Army, as a crew member with an EMT in Richmond which rushed to the Pentagon to stand by for service on September 11, 2001.
Ten years separated the grandson’s birth and grandfather’s death in 1969 at the age of 54, but as Waddell says, quoting one of her father’s two remaining crew members in their B-24 Liberators based in England during the war, “The acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
Earlier this spring, Waddell had the opportunity to travel to England. And when a seminar at Oxford University she was attending was over, she decided to visit her father’s old air base in Hardwick, near the east coast and the town of Norwich. He served there, flying 35 missions over France and Germany, with the 8th Army Air Corps’ 328th Squadron, the 93rd Bombardment Group.
