through his long friendship with fellow musician and songwriter, Paul Reisler. Reisler, who has composed the scores for all Ki Theatre productions, is currently collaborating with Tbm Paxton on a full-length piece based on Aesop’s Fables for the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.
Modestly, Paxton says, “Ninety percent of the work is Paul’s, ten percent mine.” Both have played together at The Birchmere in Alexandria.
Looking back to his roots, Paxton was inspired by the political and intellectual climate of his youth. His songs reflected a certain time and place, including the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement. However, Paxton’s inspiration did not stop there but continues to draw meaning from the complex world of today. He also is inspired in his songs by the love of his wife, Midge, who has been by his side for nearly 40 years.
One of Paxton’s most powerful recent songs (“The Bravest”) quickly caught the public’s imagination (the most downloaded song on efolkmusic.com) and is dedicated to the New York City firemen who died trying to save people trapped in the Twin Towers of the World TYade Center on 9/11. The chorus reminds us of the poignancy of Paxton’s lyrics:
“Now every time I try to sleep,
I’m haunted by the sound
Of firemen pounding up the stairs,
while we were running down.
When we met them on the stairs,
they said we were too slow.
“Get out, get out! They yelled at us.
“The whole thing’s gonna go!”
They didn’t have to tell us twice,
we’d seen the world on fire.
We kept on running down the stairs,
while they kept climbing higher.”
