By Todd Burdick Special to the Rappahannock News Ninety seven Boy Scouts from nine troops, including Troop 36 of Washington participated in the Shenrapawa District Spring Camporee May 14, 15 and 16 near Front Royal on the property of Richard McCrary, It was organized by Troop 53. The Camporee theme was “Pioneering,” which involves creating structures from wooden spars lashed together with cordage. Competitions were held to evaluate the Scouts’ lashing, splicing and knot tying skills. The final competition compared structures created by each troop using these skills. Troop 36, lead by Senior Patrol Leader Matt Bywaters, tied for first place with Troop 88 in the pioneering skills competition. The rope monkey bridge constructed by Troop 36 earned first place in the project competition.
