Waddell visited the Nissan huts where her father had lived and prepared for his missions, toured what remains of the base, including a small museum crammed with artifacts of that time and that war, and a monument in stone erected by the English to commemorate the contribution to the war by the 93rd Bombardment Group.
Her father had talked about the war after he came home in 1945,. “but not a lot.” Waddell was always aware of his service in the war.
At the Hardwick base, now overgrown and turned back to farmland, Waddell says, “I cried standing there on the same runway he took off from. Going there that day meant more to me than going to palaces or looking at Lady Di's dresses.”
