After a tractor accident last week that nearly crushed him to death, 71year-old Jim Lee of Washington remains at Fairfax Inova Hospital in critical but stable condition.
Around lunchtime on Wednesday, Aug. 4, as Lee rode a tractor on a hilltop near his home on Fodderstack Road, Bryant Lee, his nephew and partner in Lee’s Orchard, along with his 16-year old-daughter Brittney, painted a bam roof down below. A sudden, loud noise made the two look up, just in time to see a big, heavy tractor turn over and pin Jim underneath.
“We just happened to have our four-wheeler with us,” said Bryant, “so we raced up the hill about 100 yards or so to see what had happened.” A tractor wheel had snagged on a rock, causing the entire piece of machinery to flip over onto his uncle.
"I left Brittney with Uncle Jim to calm him down, and I went down the hill to get the big tractor,” recalled Bryant in an interview. “I used the forks to lift the rear end of the tractor off of him, and we pulled him out from underneath. We were able to do all this in about seven or eight minutes.”
