his son had joined the .National Guard after attending high school in Virginia. He said his son was set to retire from the guard, but could not due to the war. He said his son leaves behind a wife, two teenage daughters and an eight-monthold son.
“I never thought this would happen." the elder Cherry said, "and it hurts. It hurts bad."
Cherry said his son was glad to go because of the young guardsmen in his unit. “These kids I’m taking over there don’t know what they’re doing," Cherry said his son told him.
“Unfortunately, he was the first one killed,” Cherry said. “My son, he’s one of the best. There’s no way around it.”
Families of the guardsmen gathered at the Winchester Armory Sunday to comfort one another.
The dangers of the deployment became clear to many families after the weekend. Waddell said her son is not allowed to discuss the “missions” he and his buddies conduct.
