When mummies dating back about three millennia were recently discovered in the Scottish Isles, questions were raised about the ancient view of preservation of remains. Motives concerning the preservation of human corpses vary according to time and place. In ancient Egypt, citizens were mummified with the goal of gaining an eternal life. In the Andes, the bodies of Inca emperors were preserved so they could continue to play key roles in society. In Japan and Tibet, holy men were mummified and revered ancestors were preserved for eternity so they might be consulted on important community matters. Ancestors from prehistoric Britain were mummified out of respect for their protective powers and ability to intervene with the gods.
