“It’s a hard struggle wanting your child to be as normal as possible and getting others to realize how important that really is. My goal for Lauren is for her to do as much as possible, to keep her happy, to incorporate as many normal activities as possible, so she’s not sitting off by herself in a comer in a wheelchair. I don’t want that for Lauren. Yes, she has a disability, but there’s still a little girl inside there. She has exceeded so much that I never thought she could. She is so strong. Lauren has made me who I am.”
Lauren’s birth was normal but by her first birthday, Wanda sensed her daughter acted too socially isolated. A number of doctors were undecided about what was causing her developmental problems and suggested she suffered from some form of mental retardation.
