The deaths of two Virginia Army National Guard soldiers in Afghanistan last Saturday brought chills of fear across the state and in Rappahannock County.
These first serious casualties suffered by the Virginia National Guard involved Staff Sgt Craig William Cherry, 39, of Winchester and Sgt. Bobby E. Beasley, 36, of Inwood, W.Va. They and their Afghan interpreter were killed in Afghanistan only a month and a day after men and women from Virginia took over a U.S. Marine assignment in the ancient city of Ghazni, some 140 miles southwest of Kabul.
