Entering RCES
A single mother, Wanda moved from Madison County to her parents’ home in Gid Brown Hollow in May 2003, and last fall Lauren entered second grade at Rappahannock County Elementary School. Throughout the school day, a trained aide, Sandra Neibert, accompanied the wheelchairbound student in a mainstream second-grade classroom and to physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Wanda says she had to fight to get her daughter into a regular classroom, and it has paid off with the many friends Lauren has made with the children and staff.
Wanda was initially concerned that the children might not accept her daughter. “By second grade most of the kids know each other. They’ve made friends. I worried, “What are the kids going to think of her?’ They were awesome. It’s like second family for her at school.”
