Waddell managed to call her in the predawn hours Sunday to reassure her that he was alright. “You can imagine I didn’t get back to sleep that night," she said in an interview.

The 570 soldiers of the 3rd Battalion of the 116th Infantry Regiment were called to active duty last March and deployed to Afghanistan in July where they took over for Marines in a sector around Ghazni. The initial assignment was to secure the area for reconstruction and protect the country’s first national election since it was freed from Taliban control in 2001.
