But Wanda is well aware of what lies ahead. “It’s not like a disability that as you get older, it gets a little bit better. As Lauren gets older, it will get much worse.
“That’s when you look at life from a different point of view,” said Wanda, who herself is seeking a nursing career.
Lauren has settled into a sort of plateau where most girls with Rett Syndrome remain for most of their lives. The stage is marked with seizures and lack of coordination, but also a new interest in their surroundings, an increase in attention span, and improved communication. The final stage comes on rapidly and brings muscle weakness and curvature of the spine, but no decline in awareness or communication. These women may live to be 25 but rarely much older.
“As long as Lauren can have as much a normal life as possible, and I know that I have made every day for her as happy as I possibly could have made it, I think I will be at peace. When the time comes for Lauren, I know I’vet been a good mother.” V
