Special to the Rappahannock WwThe Virginia State Champion Girls' Softball team, composed of seven girls from Rappahannock County and seven from Culpeper, wound up its attempt at the national championship in tears Monday night after losing to Florida, 5-2, in the Southeastern Regional Tournament. The girls, 13 and 14 years of age, their coach Earl Mills, two assistant coaches, and virtually all of their parents made the Florida trip after scrambling for local support when the Culpeper Junior League All-Star Softball Team won the state championship last month. “It was a right smart experience for those little girls," said Coach Mills in an interview after the games. "I wouldn’t trade 'em for the world.” The Florida trip included three games. The team needed to win two of the three in the regional contest in order to win a trip to Washington state for the national finals. However, they lost the first game on Saturday, won the second Sunday, and lost by 52 Monday night to a team from Ft. Myers which was pble to fill the small stands with supporters. Culpeper gave it a fight until the last inning, down by those three runs. They got a runner on base, but the hopes for the national championship went down when a two-out pop fly landed firmly in a Florida mitt.
