Photo by Richard Lykes Tens of thousands of yellow Tiger Swallowtail butterflies grace the Rappahannock countryside this time of year. One feasts on the nectar of the purple flowers of mint plants on a farm on Fogg Mountain near Flint Hill one recent morning. They are called swallowtails because they have long "tails" on their hind wings which look a bit like the long, pointed tails of birds called swallows.
