and-a-half years old, a doctor in Charlottesville suspected Rett Syndrome and referred her to a neurologist at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. A newly developed blood test confirmed the diagnosis.
“We’ve been living in Rett world ever since,” Wanda says. The prognosis was that Lauren would live only several years more.
The realization of what lay ahead shook Wanda. ‘The first years were a tragedy. I don’t want to say it’s ever gotten easier, but as a parent you learn how to deal with things. I’ve seen Lauren fight hard. She’s been in the hospital so many times.”
Serious downturn
In 2002, Lauren took a serious downturn and entered a hospice program. Make-AWish Foundation, which gives terminal patients their wishes, gave her a trip to Disney World.
“And then, it was like she made almost a 90 degree turnaround. She did so well, hospice decided to sign her off a few months later. She’s made progress ever since then,”
