Becky Brown is a young farmer from Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts who has been working side by side with Cliff Miller of Sperryville’s Mount Vernon Farm in a relationship that is all about trust. In an effort to recruit young farmers to work on his land, Miller has taken a leap of faith and entrusted his entire cattle herd to the hands of this young woman.
"We want to be a grass based farm and we are trying to develop a program that is good for the animals, farmers, customers, and the land," said Miller
With her border collie, Rip, Brown herds Miller’s cattle single handedly and has begun some innovative techniques never before practiced on the farm.
Brown's history
"Being bom on a farm has been has been really important in the path I have chose,” said Brown who grew up on her father’s farm. Becky Brown’s Bunny Breeding Business was her first business venture and she sold pet rabbits to her friends. Always nurturing a love of animals Brown said she would try to coax her animals into boarding the school bus with her.
"I was given a lot of responsibilities at a young age on the farm. We knew not to name the male animals because they would end up on the dinner table," said Brown.
