On June 29, the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul, St. Peter’s Church in Washington ceased to be a “mission” and was elevated by the Catholic Diocese of Arlington to the status of “parish.”
Here in Rappahannock County, where growth is slow, St. Peter’s has been blessed with solid and steady growth. There are now over 400 registered parish members. But more than mere numbers, the new pastor emphasizes the importance of growth in holiness.
“There is a universal call to holiness. I’ve heard it and I’m trying to respond to it. Part of that response is intensely personal; I have to respond to God’s grace; generously, consistently, courageously,” emphasized Fr. Robert DeMartino, the parish priest.
Born in Flushing, NY, and raised in Virginia, the new pastor, Fr. Robert J. DeMartino, was ordained a priest in the Arlington Diocese in 1992. He came to St. Peter’s in June of 2003.
