Reflecting upon his new role as pastor, Fr. DeMartino commented, “I have to lead them, not because I’m better than them, but because I have been sent to them. I have the grace of Holy Orders, and by God’s will I am here now. He’s made me their pastor, their father, their shepherd. And so I have to be an example; that means I have to be authentic, and that’s the best safeguard against hypocrisy.”
The. foundation of Fr. DeMartino’s active priestly ministry rests firmly on the twin pillars of a deep interior prayer life and a well-bal- ‘ anced rule of life. He recalled, “There’s a saying in the literature of Catholic spirituality that’s pertinent to what I’m saying: Attende tibi or Take heed to thyself. As St. Paul stated, ‘let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall’ (1 Cor 10:12). ... So I have to attend to myself first, to my own interior life, my own sanctification. Then, and only then, can I begin to be in a position to lead anyone
