Immediately recognizing Fr. Robert J. DeMartino, I smiled, remembering that St. Peter's has now gained “parish” status.
As the article continued commenting on St. Peter's growing congregation yet a congregation steeped in spirituality and a heightened sense of community, it moved to the county's rolling hills and bucolic splendor and lack of that horrid monster “commercialism” and that it's near enough for commuters to make the trek to this idyllic paradise.
Hum.
County administrator John McCarthy didn't hold back his feelings about being “loathe” to developers while at the same time extending a welcoming hand to tourists. Way to go, John.
Over the fourth, I ran into one of Fauquier County's supervisors and he commented to me that Rappahannock had done a better job than Fauquier at holding the door on development.
There is a lot about Rappahannock County that hasn't changed in hundreds of years. There are many back roads that are still dirt covered. There are buildings from earlier centuries that dot the countryside and make you feel that you might run into a Civil War skirmish around the bend.
There are farms and streets and areas whose names proudly proclaim the legacy of their descendants dating back to the 1700s.
There is a feeling that can't be denied and anyone that has lived here, is living here, or spends a great deal of time here knows that. It’s no secret how sacred a refuge Rappahannock County is to its residents.
It’s a secret worth sharing but also a secret worth safeguarding.
