As more and more Americans face obesity, diabetes, and health hazards related to aging, the tips and advice on how to maintain overall health and youthful vigor have also increased. Most recommendations are related to diet, vitamin supplements and exercise. Although changes in these areas do have benefits, the research of former NASA scientist and Sperryville resident Dr. Joan Vemikos suggests that the real solution to combating obesity and reversing the aging process comes from a most unlikely source- Space!

Vemikos, who served as the Director of the Life Sciences Division at NASA Headquarters from 1993 until September 2000, led the ground research that developed the framework for understanding how space flight and Earth’s gravity affect the human body by looking into the health of astronauts when they returned from space explorations. She will share her findings as she discusses and signs copies of her new book, “The G-Connection: Harness Gravity and Reverse Aging” on Saturday, July 9th at 7 p.m. at the Old Sperryville Bookshop. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sure to be interesting as Dr. Vemikos explains how people can use gravity as they grow older to maintain good health and stay younger.

Vemikos says that astronauts returning from a mission in the near gravity of Space show startling changes that are normally linked to old age. After only weeks in space, their coordination and balance are disturbed; muscles and bones weaken; like diabetics, they become resistant to insulin; they do not absorb nutrients as well; they have less stamina pnd have problems getting a good night of sleep. Vemikos {joints out those astronauts recover from these changes but that older people do not- or so we have been led
