Bom Debbie Renfro in central Georgia, she grew up “begging my parents for a horse.” That first horse came, at last, when the aspiring horsewoman sold enough blackberries at a roadside stand one summer.
From that first pony and the local 4-H riding program, she’s never looked back.
Craig attended the University of Georgia and then nearby Meredith Manor School of Horsemanship in West Virginia in 1973-74. Though she started as a “western major,” she made the swap to dressage after watching the Royal Lipizzaners perform at the school. She worked for Bayard Fox outfitters for a year after school, leading pack trips into the Wyoming wilderness, and learned a bit about “horses and hospitality.”
She dabbled in reining horses, Arabians, earned a Legion of Merit in western pleasure, and trained hunters. She met future husband Walter Craig, a pony club district commissioner and hunter trainer with an international business consulting background, at a George Morris jumping clinic in the Midwest.
