The mechanism of bioluminescence in fireflies has long fascinated scientists. It results from a complicated series of chemical reactions that take place in specialized cells in the animal’s body. Basically, a compound called luciferiri reacts with oxygen and the energy-supplying molecule ATP in these cells to produce light.
Luciferin is now quite valuable as a biochemical detection tool in hundreds of clinical and commercial applications. For example, it is used to detect the presence of bacteria in contaminated foods. And it can detect changes in cellular activity in cancer cells. It has even been proposed as a way of detecting life on Mars! It used to be harvested from thousands of living fireflies, but now can be synthesized using recombinant DNA biotechnology.
