Construction at elementary school
Chappell then apprised the board on the current status of ongoing upgrades to the air conditioning and heating system at the elementary school.
The roof was opened up on schedule, Monday June 20th, so that cooling units may be anchored directly to structural framing within the building. On Tuesday, June 28, there was an unexpected event.
Torrential rains, which pooled in the plastic tarps covering the temporary openings in the roof caused the tarps to burst or leak damaging library books. The damaged books had been stacked in a central location at the instruction of the Lantz Construction Company, who is performing the work on the school.
Chappell did not elaborate at this time on what compensation, if any, would eventually be made.
But Chappell told the board the contractor had acknowledged responsibility in writing, had spread out the wet books to dry, and had moved the remaining library books well away from the construction zone.
