Fireflies
From Page B1
mating but for eating! And this apparently invests the females with chemicals that protect them from predation. Aside from this macabre (female) behavior, though, adult fireflies are rarely predaceous. For the short time they are active, most eat nothing but an occasional meal of plant nectar.
Jim asked us how many species we have in the county, but we were unable to get a reliable figure from any authority. One could presumably get a fair idea of the diversity of fireflies in an area by counting the number of different signals one sees during the evening. The pattern of flashes and the color of the light are different in each species. Some species also signal early in the evening while others wait for total darkness, and there are noticeable differences in the preferred habitats of each species.
