Two bills that might allow Rappahannock County to gain greater state funding for education passed through committees in the Virginia General Assembly this past week.
The bills in the Senate and House would make Rappahannock eligible to enter a “costsaving” agreement with another school district. As part of the agreement, Rappahannock could adopt the partner district’s more favorable “local composite index,” or LCI, which would result in greater education funding from the state.
Currently only school districts with 350 or fewer students can piggy-back in such cost-saving agreements, in which the districts would share services. The two bills would increase the cut-off to 1,200 students, allowing Rappahannock, with a current enrollment of 968, to participate.
The bills are the result of lobbying efforts by Rappahannock officials to increase state funding for Rappahannock’s education budget.
Last Thursday, the Senate Education and Health Committee referred the Senate’s bill, S.B. 559, to the Finance
